Nantucket Lightship Basket Museum 2010 Exhibit: 'FROM FOLK ART TO FINE ART"
Opening May 28, 2010

Each year we offer a new exhibit that is creative and captures the rich history of basket making. The 2010 exhibit will focus on the evolution of the craft from the sturdy work baskets and utilitarian nests made in solitude on the Lightships to the creations of the 21st century that are adorned with carved ivory and the intricate detail of scrimshaw.  From historic to contemporay these baskets are coveted by collectors as true examples of art that is unique to Nantucket.

Learn how the process, tools and techniques have evolved and enabled the artists to create detailed miniatures, a variety of new and interesting shapes with intricate ivory and exotic wood embellishments. Once again, many of the baskets in the exhibit will be on loan from private collectors.  It may be the only time these are on display for the public to see.

Many of the contemporary artists will be participating in the Museum's lecture series, demonstrating and discussing the evolution of this important art form.

See "Events" for more information on all our upcoming programs, demonstrations, classes, and lectures.
